Abstract:
The study is devoted to the teacher’s obituaries published in the
Bulgarian Exarchate‘s newspaper Novini (Vesti/Glas) during its
existence from 1890 to 1912. They are particularly important because
they refer to the pivot of the Bulgarian intelligentsia in Macedonia
under Ottoman rule. Thus formulated, the topic represents a novelty
in Bulgarian historiography. In the course of the research, 65
obituaries of teachers (43 male and 22 female) were identified, which
were collected in a special catalogue. Based on their analysis, it is
concluded that obituaries, as a kind of typified genre document, make
a correction to the corresponding memoir documents, as they provide
factual information about the names, age, education, appointment,
death (causes, circumstances), etc. of the deceased. At the same time,
the elements of the obituaries that created the posthumous image of the
Bulgarian teacher are tracked: personal characteristics, professional
biography, a description of the funeral, etc. The conclusion is reached that the examined obituaries are a valuable source for genealogy, for
the history of Bulgarian education in Macedonia at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century, and indirectly – for the history of the
actors of the Bulgarian revolutionary movement.
