Abstract:
General Ivan Marinov was one of the important military commanders
during the establishment and maintenance of Bulgarian administration
in Macedonia during the years of the Second World War. To the
general public, he is primarily known for his role in the fateful events
for Bulgaria from the early September 1944 to the late May 1945,
related to his participation in the government of Konstantin Muraviev,
the coup of 9th September and his role as commander-in-chief of the
Bulgarian army in the war against Hitler’s Germany. Much less is
known about his activities in Macedonia. Despite the contradictory
assessments of General Marinov as the commander of the 15th Ohrid
Infantry Division, his activities can be defined as consistent with
Bulgarian national and political interests. It was aimed at establishing
order and peace in the area entrusted to him, integrating the local
Bulgarian population, honouring the anniversaries of significant
events such as the Ilinden Uprising, etc. Besides, Marinov made
efforts to protect the rights of the Bulgarian population in the German
and Italian occupation zones, making numerous representations for
them before the respective authorities.
